Why I joined Special Forces? Special Forces was my plan “B.” When I found out I could not fly a B-52 in the Air Force since only one eye had 20/20 vision, my dream of attending the Air Force Academy as a pilot was squashed. I immediately signed up for the Infantry in my Junior year of high school. I was also inspired by the movie The Green Berets with John Wayne and Apocalypse Now, in addition to an article in Life Magazine about a Special Forces unit operating with a Montagnard Tribe.
